Reggie Pablo of LPMHS Batch 87, Pearl Section, Seventh Filipino to conquer the Everest

Mountaineer fulfills 15-yr dream by Tarra Quismundo
Inquirer First Posted 03:30:00 06/01/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Close to the summit of the world's tallest mountain, two of his fellow mountaineers starved for oxygen and died. Even so, there was no turning back for 36-year-old Regie Pablo.

"That was my dream. I talked to God and I told him 'I will take all the punishment you give me, but please let me live here.' I was really determined to reach the summit," the industrial engineer told the Philippine Daily Inquirer upon his return home on Tuesday night. On May 17, Pablo became the seventh Filipino to conquer the 8,848-meter Mt. Everest.

Several others in his expedition had lost heart, given up and turned around. Two lost their lives but the awesomeness of the challenge to conquer the world's tallest peak couldn't weaken Pablo's spirit. His success came a day after three other Filipinos -- Carina Dayondon, Janet Belarmino and Noelle Wenceslao of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition (FPMEE) -- scaled the peak and became the first women from Southeast Asia to achieve the feat. The female trio were expected to come home Thursday night.

On May 17 last year, three other Filipinos -- Leo Oracion and Erwin "Pastor" Emata of FPMEE, and Romeo Garduce -- became the country's first Everest summiteers.

Pablo said he was one of five adventurers who made it to the summit out of a 12-member international expedition, which also included four Americans, two Japanese, two Brazilians, a Czech, a Belgian and a German. A former member of the FPMEE that split up after the 2006 expedition over personal and money problems, Pablo pursued his dream with the funding from the telecommunications company he worked for.

"Honestly, until now, it has yet to sink in... I was wasted upon reaching the top. But still, I was fulfilled... not just happy but fulfilled because I have been planning for this for a long time, and I did it on my own," he said.

Pablo attributed his success to what he said was the Filipino's innate ability to cope.

Lpmhs-SeventySix-Cafe - Favorite Holiday

  • Maria Miyake
What's your favorite holiday and why?
Here is a new topic open for discussion. I would like to share my answer first and please let me know yours:

Christmas.. .its about love and family and because that is the most celebrated holiday in our culture and at the same time I could see and be with my entire family and there is no better way to celebrate, reunited , feel and give love than Christmas day.
  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
Ako rin Christmas. It is the most celebrated and long awaited holiday ng mga Pinoy, mapa-abroad man o hindi for family and friends gatherings and reunions in our country. Christmas is also the season during which Christians everywhere give thanks to God the Father for the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Christmas trees, Santa Claus, decorations, exchanging gifts, and the many other seasonal traditions that most of us observe are wonderful ways for family and friends to mark this time of year.
  • Maria Miyake
  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
  • Maria Miyake
Ganoon? Share ko lang dito kasi sa Japan ay grabe ang business sense pagdating sa promotion ng Christmas, maraming decorations, magagandang ilaw, mga sales, cakes, gifts, makulay, pero dahil di sila Catholics/ Christians....walang true meaning ang Christmas....its just another business day. Another working day. So kung ikaw ay Pinoy, walang pamilya or kaibigan na makakasama to celebrate, tinalo mo pa ang feeling na para kang naiwanan sa isang isla na nag-iisa....but then again....sanayan na lang. Kaya sana ang mga taong kasama ang kanilang mga pamilya, take advantage of it ano?..dahil maswerte kayo na kahit payak or simpleng celebration maganda kasi kasama ang mga mahal sa buhay at pamilya. Speaking of which...malapit na naman ang Christmas...sa Las Pinas nga simula na ng pagbebenta ng Christmas Trees at parol at lahat ng Christmas decorations.
  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
Dito sa US, it's just an ordinary holiday....mas matindi pa ang celebration nila pag Thanks-Giving Day.
  • Leony Eusebio
Christmas. This is the most awaited holiday by not only the closest relatives and friends, but also the distant ones wherein everyone shares the joy of giving. The time for healing, kiss and make-up for those who have grudges with someone close to their heart..within the family circle or even a long lost friend.
For the kids, mostly its more of material things. For the elderly, love and affection from their families whom they have not seen for quite sometime. As most of us children, being away from them when we start a new life of our own with our partner, it is very overwhelming for them to see us in this season with our families.
Christmas is the most celebrated holiday because even the kids are exerting efforts to share. Giving away their stuffs like toys, clothes, books, etc., which are sometimes their favourite ones. It is also in this season wherein we extend our efforts to share and give love for those whom we don't even know by visiting institutions, orphanages or even sharing a home for the season. This practice is definitely Filipinos'.
  • Maria Miyake
    @ Bernie,
Sabi ko we don't celebrate it here.
Kapag nag sideline ka during the holidays, baka kasamana pati pa pasko ha? Share kami diyan...lol

    @Leony,

Thanks for your thoughts.....Bernie and Leony....sige nga paki sagot this time ang tanong ko please?....Thanks and have a great evening/morning.
  • Rudy Nuevo
    HELLO EVERYONE!
Wow ang layo niyo na...late na ako..pero cge..a big bang to the coming " NEW YEAR''!
You know why... that's my b-day..and besides it's for those who cannot make it on x-mas day..for what ever reasons.Maraming pagkain...putukan..all kinds of fireworks ang ingay ng paligid,..sama-sama ang lahat.. masasaya, sharing everything what they have.

At sa ingay ng paligid....we will burried all our burdens...all our misfortunes..lahat ng klase ng kalungkutan at mga problema iiwan natin to face for the coming good years.
  • Leony Eusebio
    @Maria,
Since meron ng internet, for those who have access to it, pwede naman silang mag video call kung saan pwede nilang makita ang kanilang mga mahal sa buhay..live chat..para na din silang nakauwi di ba?
  • Leony Eusebio
  • Maria Miyake
@Rudy...its okay....walang maaga or late sa ating discussion. Masaya nga kung mas marami parang exchange gift ika nga...but instead exchange of ideas.
New Year with a bang...ika nga.
Glad you're able to join this discussion...and in the future, anyone is welcome to start a topic para naman mayroon tayong interaction ika nga....masaya di ba?

That is a very good way to talk and at the same time makita ang kausap, hindi ba?
Have a great week-end everyone!!!!!
  • Wilfredo Montalbo

  • Maria Miyake
I see....wow..thats a nice story and thanks for sharing Willie.
I am sure your boys are looking forward to visiting the Phils. again in the future...lalo pa kung Christmas season. I can imagine...kasi marami rin akong experiences with my 2 girls. Pero kami naman, we used to spend iyong school vacation nila sa Pinas nuong mga bata pa sila so we used to spend a month or two sa Pinas. Tapos nauwi rin kami ng Christmas. I have a story to share din regarding Christmas.
Umuwi kami ng Pinas to spend the holidays with our relatives and family. Sabi ko mag bless sila tinuruan ko, then I told them na I am sure they will give you something like a present or some money. Eto na nga po, pagka bless, inilahad ang kamay, di binigyan naman ng pesos, eh di kilala, ang sabi, I do not like this....please give me some DOLLARS please....nagtawanan ang mga kamag-anak kasi sabi naku wala kami niyan dito. At palibhasa mga babae, mayroon silang bag para ilagay ang kanilang mga cash gifts, walang ginawa kung di bilangin at mag compare para malaman kung sino ang nakarami.....at saka pati na rin iyong pasabog....natutuwa sila duon...just a couple of too many stories during the holiday season na na experienced namin...dahil nga di kami taga roon...those were the days...it was fun...but now...sila na ang namumudmod ng gifts sa mga pinsan , lolo at lola at mga tito and tita's and they always enjoy it.
Have a nice day/evening everyone!
  • Leony Eusebio
Experiences wise, talagang marami. Hindi lang ito puro saya kundi mayroon ding kaunting tampuhan o conflict when it comes to who's in-laws will they spend the Christmas eve.
  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
WOW layo nyo na.....just to inform you, nandito lang, medyo busy lang....am glad this section is improving....dumadami na tayo....Welcome Wilfred!!! Break muna ako ha....may project na di maiwan....Thanks to everyone....Have a nice weekend.
  • Maria Miyake
Wish we could hear more thoughts about the favorite holidays....its fun!
Well so far, we have heard some funny, interesting, first time experiences...how about the not so happy experiences that anyone would like to share?
Bernie....pag tapos ng project share ka ng unpleasant experience/s mo ha?...thats your penalty for not being active for a while....lol...just kidding!!!!
Time flies ano? Any plans for this coming Christmas Holiday anyone? Well...looking forward to hearing some more. Have a great day/evening everyone!

Lpmhs-SeventySix-Cafe - Discussion - Family or Friend ?

Displaying all 16 posts.

  • Maria Miyake
Would you rather tell your secrets or open up to a friend or to a family member? Why?
I invite bloggers to please share your opinion on the said topic/question. There won't be any right or wrong answers, just your opinion.

  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
I would rather keep my secrets to myself. Because for me, secrets are made to be found out with time.

  • Rudy Nuevo
Secret is a secret...why open it up or tell it to others, even to a member of a family?...it' a secret remember?...a secret is a secret no matter what it takes..'cause it's a secret di ba?.. a secret... a secret... a secret..wahhhh iyak na akooo..

  • Maria Miyake
Thanks Mr. Lpmhs SeventySix and thanks Rodolfo for sharing your thoughts about secrets. Anymore opinion anyone would like to share?

  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
Thanks Maria....absolutely, you're right na mas masikreto ang mga boys pagdating sa mga secrets. That's why being a secret agent is ideal only for men. Kaya kung may secrets ka, I'll give you 110% assurance na walang makakaalam, puedeng mong i-share sa akin mga secrets mo......my ears are open but my mouth is close. Tama rin si Rudy...secret is a secret....remember, we have a saying that "If you reveal your secrets to the wind you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees" .

  • Maria Miyake

  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
hehehehe...na-confused ka ba? I just want to emphasize, not all, but most of the boys ay maaasahan pagdating sa mga secrets kesa sa girls. Kaya nga 110% assurance ang binibigay ko sayo....kapag ako sinabihan mo, it's air-tight...walang makakaalam, ako lang.....even the wind cannot penetrate my mind, my heart and blow my mouth to open and reveal the secrets. Secret is a secret....but, there is always a possibility na malaman ang secret, depende rin kung sino ang keeper or kung sino gustong makalaam, maraming paraan, time will tell, baka yung mismong may secret ang mag-reveal.

  • Maria Miyake
Well said....thank you for your insight ...will consider the offer....lol

  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
hahahahaha...bakit ba favorite topic mo ay secret? Mukhang naghahanap ka ng taong pagsasabihan mo ng secret ah....I told you, am here to listen and keep your secret forevermore.

Let we do it this way, everyone keeps a secret, right? Kaya nga some of us have friends who we entrust our secrets to. Some have chosen to keep their secrets within themselves.

If we have secrets, some questions popped in our mind, hindi mo naman ididisclose agad, iniisip mo muna yung epekto sayo at sa iba:

    1. If you have a secret, will you tell it to one of your friends or some of your
friends? Or you will choose to keep it to yourself?
    2. If a secret will hurt somebody's feelings, will you choose to tell a friend if it
    concerns him or her?
    3. Must we tell all our secrets to our beloved or to a partner?
    4. Kung hindi mo naman sasabihin ang secret sa iyong loved one or to a partner, are
you a traitor, or are you not trustworthy?

We are not perfect but we have the desire to be perfect. And being not perfect napipilitan tuloy tayong gumawa ng mga bagay na hindi na natural o normal. These prompt us to hide the ugly part of our lives or deny the terrible incidents in our lives.

For me, there are secrets that need not be told if it will cause heartaches or anguish. If they will cause trouble and chaos, bakit mo pa sasabihin? But on the other hand, it can also depend on what the secrets are all about. If, for example sa Filipino culture natin where virginity is still an issue to some, will a lady tell her love that she is not a virgin anymore? If I am to be asked, the lady should immediately tell her love. Or if for example, a father is so proud of his son and brags about his being a good son all the time, hindi nya alam nagnakaw pala ng pera sa Tita nya one time, does he need to know? If the father has a frail health condition, he need not know. Anyway, everybody commits mistakes. Let him live his life until his time comes. Kaya nga para sa akin, secrets are made to be found out with time!!!

  • Maria Miyake
Well said, i can't ask for a better explanation than what you just did.
Thanks for the pointers and for the clarity of your examples.
Have a nice week-end!

  • Lpmhs SeventySix Cafe'
Thank you so much Chat. Have a nice week-end too...take care...bye.

  • Leony Eusebio
Very well said Kuya!..sayang di ako nakaabot sa discussion. Next topic nalang..kung kaya kong sagutin..hehehe. Have a nice week-end po!
